RODABORN

Beto Cardoso drops low with one palm on the stones, facing Luzia. Luzia Marques sways in a low ginga, one arm across her face, eyes on Beto.

Three fighters share the roda in the fortress plaza of Recanto Branco. Two of you play while the berimbau sets the pace, and whoever wins stays in.

Change the toque

The berimbau runs the roda. Its toque (the rhythm it plays) sets how fast both of you can move. Press 1, 2 or 3, or pick a gourd, and watch the game change.

Slow toque: Luzia and Beto sway low and wait.

Mestre Zé Baiano seen from behind at the edge of the roda, berimbau upright in his hand, singing under his straw hat.

Quem canta a roda, segura a rodaWhoever sings the roda holds the roda.

Mestre Zé Baiano

At seventy-four and half blind, Zé is still the first voice you hear in the roda. He plays the berimbau that opens the game, then walks in and fights with it, gourd first.

In the story chapters he calls the toque. When he switches it in the middle of your game, your moves switch with it, and he sings about it while you adjust.

One stays

Beto Cardoso never walks into a roda. He cartwheels in, and from above you can see why the circle leaves him room.

The roda seen from straight above: Beto mid cartwheel in the center, the crowd clapping in a ring of straw hats.

Every match puts three fighters in the circle. Two play in the middle while the third waits at the edge and claps. Take the exchange and you stay in. Lose it and you trade places with whoever waited.

Luzia and Beto play. Iara waits at the edge.

Axéthe charge a good game builds

Play without hitting. Each clean dodge, each spin that rolls into the next one, fills your Axé ring. Fill it and the roda gives you one acrobatic move, once per game.

Luzia Marques starts quiet and heavy. By the third exchange her heel comes in low and round, and Beto has to decide fast whether to block or roll under.

Luzia's spinning heel kick lands on Beto's raised forearm, dust bursting at the contact.

Contra-Mestra Iara Sá

She waits. You run out of ideas. Then one kick.

Iara spends most of a game standing on the deck of the old ship with her taped hands loose, reading you. Her Last Word is a single straight kick off a pivot, and it only comes once you have shown her everything.

Iara Sá stands still on the deck, arms loose, chin down.

The bench

Twelve fighters sit at the edge of the roda waiting for their turn. Pick one and they get up and step in.

Luzia Marques

Quiet for two exchanges, then her low spinning heel catches you late.
